How to Use Practice Butler

Learn how to maximize your practice sessions with spaced repetition

What is Spaced Repetition?

Spaced repetition is a proven learning technique that involves reviewing information at gradually increasing intervals. This method significantly improves long-term retention by reinforcing memories just before they begin to fade. Practice Butler applies this powerful concept to music practice, making your sessions more effective and efficient.

The Two Components of Practice Butler

Practice Butler consists of two main features that work together to optimize your practice routine:

1. New Practice Sessions

During a New Practice Session, you practice as you normally would, with the app open and ready to capture important moments. Whether you're working through familiar pieces, learning new material, or improvising, the app remains active in the background.

When you encounter a challenging musical passage that you want to master, simply record a short video of yourself playing it. This video becomes a personalized practice cue that will help you revisit and refine this skill in the future.

As you continue practicing, you'll build a collection of videos, each representing a specific musical passage or technique you want to perfect.

2. Review Sessions

Approximately once per day, open Practice Butler for a Review Session. During these sessions, the app presents you with videos from your collection, each serving as a reminder to practice that particular passage.

The app's intelligent scheduling system shows:

  • Recently recorded videos frequently
  • Older videos less often
  • Well-practiced videos at extended intervals

After viewing each video, you have two options:

  • Mark as "Completed": Select this after practicing the passage and making progress
  • Skip: Choose this if you prefer not to practice that particular passage at the moment

How the System Adapts to Your Progress

The spaced repetition algorithm adjusts based on your responses:

  • Completed videos: The interval between showings increases, meaning you'll see them less frequently.
  • Skipped videos: These will appear again in your next Review Session.

Best Practices for Success

Keep practice sessions focused

When a video appears, practice the passage just long enough to feel you've made meaningful progress. Avoid over-practicing any single item during Review Sessions.

Trust the process

New videos will appear almost every time you review initially. As you consistently practice and mark them as completed, they'll appear less frequently until they're eventually mastered and no longer shown.

Stay consistent

Regular daily Review Sessions maximize the effectiveness of spaced repetition and ensure steady progress toward mastery.

Through this systematic approach, Practice Butler transforms scattered practice into a structured, efficient system that builds long-term musical skills.
